India is not a country that people usually associate with the genre of Heavy Metal. Even though India has a rich cultural background, due to its rigid beliefs few genres like metal remain unexplored and the respective communities remain underground. With “Bollywood Culture” prevailing, the independent metal bands scene faces a lot of difficulty coming into the limelight. But Indian Metal Bands scene is slowly but surely coming into its own.

But amongst all these adversities, Indian Metal locale is pretty active. It is dear to its true followers and has given the fans more than a few world-class acts. Several other bands are steadily rising through the scene with their excellent work.

So here we are with 10 of the most prominent Indian Metal Bands that are already headlining the scene or are on the rise.

This Groove Metal Heavyweights derived their name from a B-grade Horror Film, it means ‘horrific death’. Hailing from Mumbai, this band hit the roads on 2003 and since then a huge amount headbanging and mosh pitting followed them everywhere they went. Mainly known for performing in College fests, Bhayanak Maut is in the heart of every Metalhead in India. They have three studio albums and two EPs out for grabs. Their current line-up consists of Aman, Rahul, Baba, Aditya and Rishav who are collectively laying the smackdown in every gig they perform in.

KRYPTOS – Heavy Metal

They are considered the true spearheads of Indian Metal Revolution. This Heavy Metal band comes from the ‘Metal Capital of India’, Bangalore. Formed in 1998 by Nolan Lewis(vocals and rhythm guitar) and Ganesh K.(Bass), this band is one of the very few who stuck with the Indian Metal scene from the very beginning. Wit Rohit Chaturvedi on lead guitar and Vijit Singh handling the drums, Kryptos has become an unstoppable force conquering the Heavy Metal scene globally. They have released five electrifying albums for you to check out and be mind blown.

ZYGNEMA – Groove Metal

A 4-piece Thrash/Groove metal band also hailing from Mumbai, Zygnema is probably the current crowd favourite in the Indian Metal Scene. Formed in 2006 they have released three full-length albums packed with hard-hitting grooves that will compel you to Headbang the hell out. They have won numerous accolades, namely, “Best Metal Band” and “Best Metal Song” of 2011 hosted by Rolling Stones Magazine. Be sure to check out their songs, “The Phoenix Effect”, “I am nothing” and “Theories of Lies and Negation” for a good neck exercise.

This Metalcore veterans hailing from Kolkata is the first metal band from India to have been signed by Six Inch Nails, an international record label. They have been headlining the scene since 2007 when they came out with their debut EP ‘Death destruction’.The current line-up comprises of Sunny Xorn on vocals, Suvam Moitra on lead guitar, Biswaroop Bardhan on rhythm guitar, Soumyadeep Das on bass and Dipayan Chakraborty on drums. Watch them tear apart venues with their hard-hitting numbers on their upcoming gigs. 

DEMONIC RESURRECTION – Blackend Death Metal

They are the torch bearers of Indian Metal to the global Audience. This Blackened Death Metal giant hails from the unforgiving streets of Mumbai. Formed in 2000 by their vocalist and rhythm guitarist Sahil “Demonstealer” Makhija, this band has gone through many line up changes and are currently fronted by Sahil and Viru Kaith, their drummer. Songs like, “The Unrelenting Surge of Vengeance” and “The Demon King” are internationally acclaimed. Their latest album “DASHAVATAR” is currently making a lot of buzz in the market and are up for grabs.

This Indian Folk/Rap Metal setup comes from the capital city of New Delhi. Formed in 2016 they started off as a parody band that uploaded metal covers of pop and Bollywood songs. Later on, when they started doing their own composition they blended in the Indian Bollywood flavour with metal to form a different sub-genre. We can safely say that Karan Katyar, Jayant Bhadula, Roshan Roy, Raoul Karr and Sarthak Pahwa have put up an act worth attention.

A renowned critically acclaimed Gore-grind band from Mumbai. Their journey to the apex of Indian Extreme Metal scene began in 2007. Gurdeep Singh Narang, Aron Pinto, Prateek Rajagopal and Kaushal LS came together in search of something that would not only make a mark but also eat it alive. Since then they have been on many national and international tours and shared the stage with Extreme Metal Giants like Dying Fetus and many more. Their battle-cry goes like, “Jai Mata Di Lets CHOP!”

YONSAMPLE – New Age Progressive Metal

Yonsample are one of the most distinct Modern Progressive names to have emerged from Kolkata, rather India. This Djent setup has been hitting the road since 2010 and they are a duly respected Veteran of the Indian Metal Scene. Subsequently, they took the metal scene by storm ever since their debut EP ‘Paraphernalia’ got released. They have shared the stage with Metal heavyweights in the likes of Meshuggah, Tesseract, Parkway Drive, etc.

WRECKLESS SHADOW – Metal Core

These Melodic Metalcore juggernauts hail from the serene hills of Meghalaya. Formed in 2016 by their vocalist Benny Cage, this band has made its mark in the metal scene with their successive wins in various band battles. With Freddy Haze on guitar, Baio Sylliung on bass and Aron Blade on drums, this 4-piece setup has many notable songs like ‘Feeding Fear’, ‘In a Memory’ and many more.
