Kindness and love for other beings are the two qualities that we must possess now, especially considering the incidents listed below. We have come so far and moments like this mark a dark spot in our history as humans. Whether it be negligence or absence of will-power or the dearth of a strong legislative system, the acts are condemnable. And they should not have happened in the first place. Below are 10 heart-wrenching and the worst moments in human history of recent times, which have been a blow to humanity.

On this Human Rights Day (on 10th December), we are talking of these incidents to highlight the times when our right to live and prosper as a human being in a dignified, fear-free manner was trampled upon without any remorse or sensitivity. We present the 10 Worst Moments in Human History :

1. Dr. Priyanka Reddy Rape and Murder Case

“I am scared”, she said. Dr. Priyanka Reddy was raped, smothered and burnt by four men. Her car developed a flat tyre and she sought help from these so-called ‘humans’ late at night. As if this wasn’t heartbreaking enough, Minister Mahmood Ali blames the victim and says that she should’ve called the police instead of her sister. Are people in their right minds? 

2. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

America dropped a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. The incident killed around 135,000 people with its effects still lingers on in the city. The survivors suffered radiation sickness, fever, bleeding from gums and even death. Another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki after another 3 days, which killed more than 50,000 people. This was in the midst of World War II, which in itself was a question on the existence of humanity. This incident is one of the worst moments in human history.

The brutal and horrifying crime that took place on December 16th, 2012 shocked the entire nation. The case will make you wonder if humanity is still alive. The final judgment of death by hanging of the convicts was finally passed in 2017, after 5 YEARS! Jyoti Singh, the victim, was brutally raped, beaten and tortured by 5 men in a moving bus. She succumbed to the injuries after 13 days of the assault. The incident moved the entire country. 

4. The building of the Berlin Wall

Berlin Wall separated Germany’s communist East from the West. The purpose of building the wall was to stop the western ‘fascists’ from entering East Germany to undermine the building of a socialist state. However, the real intention was to prevent mass defections from East to West. It was constructed OVERNIGHT on 12-13 August, 1961. on 13 August, the inhabitants of Berlin found themselves cut off from their family, friends and in some cases, even their homes. It was not possible to go from east to west. At least 171 people were killed when trying to get over the Wall. It stood till 9 November 1989. 

5. Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

On 13 April 1919, people gathered at Jallianwala Bagh, a garden, in Amritsar for the Baishakhi fair. It was a gathering of non-violent protestors. General Reginal Dyer ordered mass firing on the crowd. And the firing lasted for ten minutes, killing and injuring more than 1000 people, including children. The whole nation protested against this brutal act. Rabindranath Tagore renounced his knighthood stating, “The time has come when the badges of honour make our shame glaring in their incongruous context of humiliation and I for my part wish to stand shorn of all special distinctions, by the side of those of my countrymen, who for their so-called insignificance, are liable to suffer a degradation not fit for human beings.”

There were horrifying concentration camps and gas chambers bringing about the genocide. On the night of 2-3 December 1984, there was a gas leak that immediately killed more than 2 thousand people and thousands were injured. It was a catastrophe in World’s industrial history. The primary cause was corporate negligence. The Union Carbide Chairman at that time was allegedly held responsible for it. But there were no investigations against him and there was no punishment for the perpetrators, as he managed to sneak out of the country. Hence, the thousands of lives lost did not get any justice.

There was a major fire in a private hospital AMRI in Dhakuria, Kolkata in 2011. It suffocated 94 people to death. Allegedly that there were patients who were locked inside and not allowed to leave because their hospital bills would have then remained unpaid. It has been 8 years since that incident and the victims’ families still await justice. A blow to humanity in all sense!

Shame on Humanity was trending on Twitter when a 3-year-old girl was killed in Aligarh, UP, in June 2019 over monetary disputes. The postmortem report of the girl child showed the barbaric extremity of the murder; her skin was peeled and arms were amputated and her eyes were gouged out. A reprehensible act and one of the worst moments in human history!
