The original name of Shaheed Minar was “Ochtorloney Monument”. It was in the honor of Sir David Ochterlony. He won in the Anglo-Nepalese War. Established in the year 1848, it is 48 meters high. You will need to climb 218 stairs to reach the top of the monument. It will give you a bird’s eye view of the entire city, similar to the London Eye. The architecture is a splendid blend of Egyptian, Syrian and Turkish styles. It is one of the top Kolkata tourist places. The famous market and socialising spot of Esplanade is just opposite to it.
